Celebrating the 140th anniversary of the publication of Black Beauty

Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell | 25th July - 25th November 2017

Black Beauty was first published by Jarrold in 1877, Anna Sewell's only book, it has been an international favourite ever since, seilling millions of copies and still in print today. To mark this anniversary, Jarrold has loaned its collection of thirteen of the original eighteen illustrations commissioned from renown animal artist Cecil Aldin to The Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell.

The paintings had been carefully stored at the Jarrold Department Store and were rediscovered in the early 1980s. They are rarely put on display so that their bright colours are retained and this is a special opportunity for more people to have a chance to see them.

Jarrold Department Store will also be marking the anniversary with a special Black Beauty cream tea in August and events in the Book and Art Departments.
