Bestselling children’s author Dame Jacqueline Wilson, who supports this new initiative, comments: “I am delighted to be supporting Independent Booksellers Week. During many of my book tours, I have experienced the entrepreneurial spirit and bespoke service delivered by so many of our independent bookshops. I’ve always valued the passion and dedication of independent booksellers, and I feel they play an important role in the local community. I hope that many of my fellow authors and booklovers will see this initiative as a chance to show our appreciation for the fantastic job that independent booksellers do.”
Meryl Halls, Head of Membership Service at The Booksellers Association comments: "Independent Booksellers Week is a grassroots initiative devised by independent booksellers to spotlight the vital role that independent bookshops play in their local communities. The week will be a wonderful opportunity for customers to rediscover what makes their local bookshop so unique. We’re delighted by the support that this initiative has received from booksellers and publishers; and the fact that such well-loved authors as Jacqueline Wilson and Alan Titchmarsh are taking part is proof of how keen the whole industry has been to get behind local bookshops.”
Independent Booksellers Week is part of the Love Your Local Bookshop campaign which was launched in October 2007 with the Independent Booksellers’ Book of the Year Award. Independent booksellers created two shortlists – one adult and one children’s – for the public to vote on. The winners were announced on the 17th December as Suite Françaiseby Irène Némirovskyfor the Adult section, and Alone on a Wide Wide Sea by Michael Morpurgo for the Chidren's category.
