Jarrold is the winner of the 2009 Business Development Award sponsored by solicitors Howes Percival. Jarrold executive chairman, David Hill, was presented with the award at the annual EDP Business Awards dinner on 9 October by Andrew Barnes, managing partner at Howes Percival.
David Hill said "Jarrold has been part of the Norfolk community for almost 240 years. I am honoured to received this prestigious award on behalf of everyone in the company who continue to keep our businesses profitable, competitive and relevant to our customers after so many years.
In recent years our markets have changed and all of us have had to embrace that change and develop new strategies to manage and promote our businesses in different ways. This process isn't easy but the award is recognition that our strategies are working".
The judges were impressed with the clarity of management thinking and focus on profit generating activities.
It was noted that the continued development of the St James site will open up a new business quarter to the city, providing high-quality office buildings and leisure facilities, and will help to aid employment growth.
They commented that the company has a progressive attitude to retailing with further developments planned for its department and sports stores that are likely to attract new brands to the city and provide an interesting and fun shopping experience.
The management team was recognised as having responded decisively to the difficulties of operating in printing and the challenges of a modern retail sector, creating profitable and exciting new operations that retain the heritage and trust values associated with one of Norfolk's best known brands.
